Why Walking Is Worth Your Time

No gym. No plan. No excuses. Just you and a pair of shoes.

🔥

Burns calories without the burnout

Walking burns roughly the same calories per mile as running — it just takes a little longer. A brisk 3-mile walk can torch 250–350 calories. No injury, no sweat, no problem.

❤️

Gentle on your joints at any age

Low-impact means you can do it every day, at any size, at any fitness level. Your doctor says "just walk more" for a reason — it actually works.

🧠

Proven to reduce stress and anxiety

Twenty minutes outside can shift your mood measurably. The research is consistent: walking reduces cortisol, improves sleep, and gives your brain the reset it needs.

👟

The only equipment you need is a pair of shoes

No membership. No gear. No app required. Walking is the most democratic exercise on the planet — free, available everywhere, and accessible to almost everyone.

Start where you are.

You don't need to be fast. You don't need to walk far. You just need to start. A 10-minute walk around the block is not a warmup for something better — it is something better. This site exists to help you figure out what "more walking" looks like for you, specifically. Use the calculator, pick a distance, and go.

How the Calculator Works

Enter any distance in miles, kilometres, or steps. Choose a walking pace that matches how you actually walk — not how fast you think you should. The estimate updates instantly, giving you walking time, calories burned, and step count all at once.

Calorie estimates use the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method, which adjusts based on pace and your body weight. Walking speed calculations are based on peer-reviewed research into average walking speeds by pace type. Numbers are estimates — real-world results vary by stride length, terrain, and how many times you stop to look at that dog across the street.

For most walks on flat ground, the moderate pace setting (3.0 mph) is the right starting point. If you're walking with purpose or on a treadmill, try brisk or power walk. If you're strolling with a toddler, leisurely is your friend.
